About the project

Our client is a Finnish business specializing in city planning and management and has been a valued partner of BHSOFT for over 10 years. We previously developed a web application to help them manage urban development and construction projects efficiently.


To further enhance security, access management, and workflow efficiency, the client required the integration of Single Sign-On (SSO), user group control and event management using Odoo. This upgrade ensures seamless authentication, improved user role management, and better data security across their platforms.


To strengthen security and user experience, the client required an integrated Odoo-based system that could:

  • Enable SSO for seamless authentication across Odoo, WikiJS, Nextcloud Drive, and future platforms
  • Manage users centrally via Odoo, while synchronizing account and permission data with AWS Cognito
  • Ensure accurate user role mapping between Cognito user groups and Odoo roles
  • Provide localized user experience by defaulting the Odoo website language to Finnish
  • Streamline event management with online/offline categorization, calendar file attachments, and custom email notifications

The project faced several mid-course shifts and technical obstacles:

  • Shifting Identity Strategy: Originally planned to use Odoo as the Identity Provider (IdP), the client later opted for AWS Cognito. This pivot required Odoo to instead act as the registration interface, syncing data with Cognito.
  • Bidirectional Role Syncing: Mapping Cognito user groups to Odoo roles—and keeping them dynamically updated—posed complexity.
  • ICS File Compatibility: Outlook mishandled standard ICS files, displaying incorrect times. Customization was required to ensure accurate calendar integration.
  • Frequent Requirement Adjustments: Lack of initial clarity led to changing needs mid-development, requiring agile adaptation from the BHSoft team.



To overcome these challenges, we implemented a secure, efficient, and fully integrated authentication and event management system in Odoo.

Adaptive Development & Clearer Communication

  • Maintained regular discussions with the client to clarify needs early.
  • Ensured flexibility in development to accommodate changes efficiently.

OAuth 2.0-Based SSO Implementation:

  • Implemented OAuth 2.0-based authentication flow where Odoo acted as an intermediary between AWS Cognito and external platforms (Wiki, Nextcloud Drive, etc.).

 User Group Control with AWS Cognito & Odoo Role Mapping

  • Developed a user-role synchronization mechanism between AWS Cognito user groups and Odoo user roles.

Advanced Event Management System in Odoo

  • Developed ICS file generation and email attachment functionality, allowing attendees to add events to their personal calendars.
    • Identified that Outlook parsed ICS files differently than Google Calendar.
    • Customized ICS file formatting to ensure the correct time zone conversion in Outlook.




Centralized User Registration via Odoo: Odoo acts as the unified entry point, automating Cognito account creation.

Seamless SSO Experience: Users now access all connected systems without repeated logins.

Dynamic Role Syncing: Updates in either Cognito or Odoo reflect across platforms instantly.

Localized Web Interface: Finnish language is consistently enforced across all user sessions.

Outlook-Compatible Event Integration: Custom ICS files ensure accurate date and time display, eliminating scheduling errors.

Targeted Email Notifications: Custom email workflows enhance communication and increase event participation.
